This place is adorable! It’s very small and peaceful, the food is very good, and it’s on the cutest block in the world. I got the quinoa salad, which is possibly the best salad I’ve ever had. The hummus rivaled hummus I’ve had in Israel. The one thing I didn’t like was how pricey the drinks were. The cheapest glass of wine is $11 (the Temperanillo – delicious) and most are either $14 or $15. And since when can you charge $8 for a Shock Top… But even knowing this, I would still come back.

Balzem is a really wonderful new Mediterranean spot in the heart of Nolita. Owned by Balahan Bobus who is also the Executive Chef, Balzem is a true labor of love. I recently attended a press dinner there and was really delighted by the entire experience. The eclectic menu focuses on sharing small plates which are big on flavors and freshness. Several of the dishes are from family recipes that Balahan has recreated with a modern touch. What I love most about Balahans cooking is that he doesnt drown out his dishes with heavy sauces or too much spice. Each dish from the vegetables to seafood to meat is handled with just the perfect amount of seasoning that really allows the freshness of the ingredients to be tasted.I also think that at Balzem they have mastered the art of grilling. Both the seafood courses we tried which consisted of a charred octopus and a grilled shrimp were done to perfection. One of my absolute favorite dishes was the Zucchini pancakes which were such a surprise!Balzem has a phenomenal wine program with wine director Mehdi Mokrani who offers a really well curated selection of Mediterranean wines from small-estate vineyards. Each dish we tried was perfectly paired with wines that not only surprised us but really delighted us too.Balzem is open for lunch and dinner everyday with a happy hour from 5:00 7:00 PM with $6 wines, $5 beers and $5 mezze and tapas. They also offer brunch on Sundays and plan to have outdoor seating starting in June. therestaurantfairy.com

  • Manhattan With A Twist

Nolita is home to many hip and trendy bars and restaurants and Balzem is no exception. The Mediterranean bistro gives off a rustic, intimate vibe from the moment you step in, thanks in part to its exposed brick walls, reclaimed pine wood bar, vintage mirrors and custom-made chandeliers. Additionally, you will find comfortable bistro seating, cherry wood tables and no shortage of beautifully displayed wine racks.Customers can take a seat at the bar, where they can choose from imported beers, a selection of Mediterranean wines from small-estate vineyards, and specialty cocktails or, better yet, they can enjoy lunch, dinner or weekend brunch at the restaurant. Chef and restauranteur Balahan Bobus created a superb menu, featuring an array of classic Mediterranean dishes, many of which are family recipes, and modernizing them. The menu is largely comprised of mezzes (or tapas), perfect for trying numerous dishes and sharing amongst friends. Standouts include Crevette Grille, a grilled shrimp dish served with zucchini and spices; Branzini Ceviche, a unique twist on ceviche using branzini, arugula and dill; and Prosciutto Wraps, stuffed with burrata on a bed of peppers and drizzled with balsamic. To read more the full review, head to the blog! manhattanwithatwist.com
